Why is it that every time I don’t compete – or whenever I do compete but don’t make it to the Finals – the rest of my team mates bring home the premium bacon? Did someone put a curse upon me that while my team mates get all the glory, I stay on the bleachers as a mere spectator, or cry backstage and mourn over my defeat? This is the first time I wasn’t able to compete in the national rankings, and I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT! I hate it so much that I kinda wished the heavy rain the previous night would call off the competition! Haha!
Kidding aside,
I cheered as loudly as a lunatic would during the 2013 DSCPI National Ranking
and Competition held at Philsports Arena (ULTRA) last Saturday! For my BMG team mates,
of course: one pair each for the Grade B (4-Dance) and Grade A (Amateur/5-Dance)
Latin categories.

Benjamin
Legaspi and Rochelle Canoy finally brought home the gold trophy as they emerged
as champions in the Grade B Latin event! They were the same champions on the last
Dancesport sa Sugbu held in Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino last month!
Defending champions
from Bacolod Philip Deocadiz and Queenie May Sendico ranked 2nd in the
Grade B event, whereas Samson Orlanes and Mae Pabuaya from Team Cebu finished
as the 3rd placers.

In the Grade A Latin event, the defending champions Michael Marquez and Stephanie Sabalo held on to their title while my team mates Roque Marquez and Rhea Marquez grabbed the silver medals. These kids have a long track of awesome dancing ever since they started as junior dancers all the way to the Youth categories, and now the youngest couple in the Amateur Latin event is in Rank 2! I love it! Wilbert Aunzo and Pearl Marie Caneda of Team Cebu ended up as 3rd placers.

While these
two couples climb the platform to claim their trophies and try hard to suppress
their tears, we, the ever-supportive teammates and cheerers, started a noise
barrage in the stadium. LOL!
Another highlight
of this year’s National Ranking is the 1st International Friendship
Games Wheelchair Dancesport Competition. Delegates from Italy and Taiwan came
to Manila to participate in this sporting activity that is slowly gaining
popularity in the Philippines. The Tahanang Walang Hagdan Wheelchair athletes represented the country, along with their respective partners from the BMG
team.

Rochelle
Canoy and her partner Julius Obero from the Philippines were the champions in both
the 3-Dance and 5-Dance Latin events.
The team
from Taiwan finished as 2nd placers in the same categories.
For both
3-Dance and 5-Dance Latin, Benjamin Legaspi and partner Mylene Felix, also from the
Philippines, ranked 3rd.
It was the
first time I have ever seen Modern Ballroom Wheelchair dancing, and man, it was
awesome! I was so busy staring at the competitors that I forgot to take a
video!
This Italian couple finished as champions in the Modern Ballroom 5-Dance Wheelchair category.
The delegates from Taiwan bagged the 2nd and 3rd places.
I was able
to talk to the Italian couple after the competition and learned that they have
been dancing together for 4 years. Pretty cool, huh?

Rumor has it
that the top couples in the Wheelchair Dancesport events will go to Japan for
the World Championships. I think that’s the most exciting news ever for my BMG
team mates!
With all
the awesome dancing I witnessed that day, I got more determined than ever to
come back to regular dance training. My partner will take her licensure exam on
November, so by the start of December, we are going to practice again! I’m
terribly excited!
Congratulations
again to all the winners of the National Ranking and the Wheelchair Dancesport
event!
