Your First Look at Bag O’ Shrimps in McKinley Hill

Seafood lovers are bound to enjoy the latest offering of Tuscany Estates -- Bag O’ Shrimps, a dampa-style seafood restaurant has quietly opened its doors to the public last February. The first of its kind in this food strip, this California-inspired diner boasts of clean, bright interiors and decided to stick to the basics; shrimps, crabs, clams, and mussels dominate the simple menu, with a few appetizers and beer grub alongside.

The concept is straightforward: choose one of the four protein options, select your sauce, make it as spicy as you wish, add some corn or sausage if you want, and eat everything with your bare hands! They place a white paper mat you can use to feast on your seafood and give you a bucket in which to dump your shells; you can request for plates and utensils if you don’t wish to eat bare hands.

We tried the Shrimps in Bag O’ Momma sauce, which is a combination of the three other sauces—Lemon Pepper, Cajun and Garlic Butter. The level of spiciness was mild—I personally would’ve preferred “very hot” but my friends had low tolerance for heat. I found the shrimps to be fresh and nicely seasoned; the sauce was an excellent choice, very flavorful and appetizing.

Thinking that a pound of shrimps wouldn’t be enough for the three of us, we ordered 500 grams of mussels as well. Accompanied by the Garlic Butter sauce, the mussels were large and fresh but actually a bit bland. Even the level of heat disappointed me—we had specified it to be “medium” but came out not even a bit spicy at all!

As always, fresh seafood goes perfectly with beer, and what I loved about Bag O’ Shrimps is that they sell imported beer really cheap. Cheaper than The Distillery does, which is my eternal basis for reasonably priced booze. I bought a bottle of Blue Moon for only P130! In case you don’t have any idea at all, it’s priced at P150 at The Distillery and could reach up to P250 or P300 in upscale, swanky bars!

My first impression was nearly perfect (except for the mussels) but I got turned off by the staff’s refusal to let us sit on the second level. The server said they fill up the tables on the ground floor first (which, by the way, could only accommodate about 16 people) before allowing diners to sit upstairs. I say, what the fuck.

In any case, I still think Bag O’ Shrimps is a nice place to chill over yummy seafood and cold beer. I know a lot of people who would die for shrimp, and I daresay this restaurant would be heaven for them. And while I’m not one of those people, I’ll probably head over to Bag O’ Shrimps without second thought when a sudden craving hits.
