Pepe's Birthday Giveaway #5 | Red Baron Ribs & Steaks: New Branch, New Dishes

Looks can be deceiving—and this is true for Red Baron Ribs & Steaks, an unassuming neighborhood restaurant in Lourdes, Quezon City that serves affordable but delicious fare. Who would’ve imagined you’d get a decent steak or fantastic ribs right on top of a car wash? ClichĂ© as it may sound, discovering an awesome place like this—and in such an unlikely and obscure location—is like finding a hidden treasure, a discovery that we just can’t help but tell others, not only because it's valuable info, but also because it makes us feel good that we were the first to learn about it. Red Baron Ribs & Steaks is such a revelation. (If you think about it, it’s also like spotting a thousand-peso bill underneath the throngs of passengers in the MRT.... OK, enough with the metaphors.)

Remember when I first wrote about Red Baron, I said that I wish they would open more branches? Well, the great news is that they have opened a second branch in Bambang, Manila—a short walk from the LRT station and from the neighboring nursing school, Metropolitan College of Nursing! It’s still far from The Fort where I work, but still, it’s easily accessible via LRT. The new store is just as humble as the original in QC, with the same façade design and car wash concept.

With the opening of this new branch comes a couple of new dishes as well, which I was lucky enough to try during my visit. For instance, ordinary fries are dressed up with a creamy truffle sauce peppered with cayenne and chili flakes, and the result? Red Baron’s Spicy Truffle Cream Fries (PhP163). If you like loaded fries then this should tickle your fancy. However, as a hardcore truffle lover, I longed for an earthier flavor. The added spiciness redeemed it though. The Baked Potato Soup (PhP159) is another good starter. Thick and creamy, it comes with chunks of potato and slices of buttered wheat bread. A perfect intro to a sumptuous meal of steaks and ribs.

A breakfast sandwich comes in the form of the Sunrise Sausage Patties (PhP159), which is cheese-filled sausage patty in between wheat bread, lettuce, tomato, and a runny egg. The patty is meaty and slightly sour, and the sandwich comes served with a side of potato crisps. For something heavier, try the Flaky Tuna Pie (PhP159): a hefty pastry stuffed with chunks of savory, creamy tuna. The serving is huge and be easily shared by two.

The highlight of my meal was the El Diablo Crusty Steak (PhP952). This steak is made up of Meltique beef, whose excellent marbling enables it to achieve unbelievable juiciness and tenderness. The homemade chili garlic sauce is slathered atop the slices of tender meat, rendering each forkful a spicy kick and a slight sweetness.

Ordering the El Diablo gives you 3 Wild Sides, a serving of rice, and a jar of peanuts. Among the Wild Sides, I highly recommend the Garlic Mashed Potato (shown in the photo) and Red Baron's Signature Rice (turmeric-flavored). The addictive chili garlic sauce is being sold in the restaurant as well, perfect for your own home cooking and basically, perfect for spreading onto anything meaty!

Homemade Chili Garlic Sauce (PhP260) and Atsara (PhP220)
I didn’t get ribs anymore or my body would’ve burst, but trust me, you have to order some when you visit. You must also try the Herb-Crusted Heavy Porterhouse Steak, Nachorrific (best nachos ever!), and their highly popular Good Shepherd Ube Shake (read food review here)! Red Baron also has a good selection of drinks, like the Sunny Peel Fruit Slush, Peach-Mango, and KitKat Matcha.

Left to right: Nachorrific (PhP258); Herb-Crusted Porterhouse (PhP1,959); Good Shepherd Ube Shake (PhP138)

Left to right: Sunny Peel (PhP128); Peach-Mango (PhP98); KitKat Matcha (PhP138)
Congratulations to Melvin and Joyce, as well as Lynn and Reupert,  for the second Red Baron Ribs & Steaks branch! Keep dishing out great, simple, no-fuss food that keep hungry diners satisfied and returning for more!
