Pepe's Birthday Giveaway #2: Here’s What I Think about Rocketroom’s Guilty Pleasures Wednesday Gimmick

If you love going out for a drink and partying with friends, I’m sure you have, on multiple occasions, been stumped as to where to go on a mid-week. There’s not much happening during Wednesdays—party folks prefer hanging out on a Friday or Saturday night—and if you’re a yuppie who feels spent after a long day at work, sometimes you just want to go someplace where you could loosen that tie and let it all out. Luckily, you don’t have to settle for an “uneventful” night of beer and subdued chatter as Rocketroom has launched the most awesome Wednesday gimmick of all Wednesday gimmicks: Guilty Pleasures, a 90’s-themed party perfect for anybody seeking out pure, unashamed fun.

I’m a 90’s boy and I sailed through high school listening (against my will at times) to Westlife, Santana, N’Sync, Boyzone and Backstreet Boys. When in the mood for a bit more “noise”, I switch to Nirvana, Queen, Take That, and Collective Soul. Then tunes like “Runaway Train” or local music like The Eraserheads drift from the radio, and we know it’s time to sit on a circle, sing, and play songs on the guitar for hours eternal.

How powerful nostalgia is—and this was evident when I stepped into Rocketroom one Wednesday night, filled with people (of my age!) bouncing and bopping to Spice Girls, U2, and Britney Spears; swaying their hands, as if singing an anthem, to Oasis and Alanis Morissette. I was transported a decade back, except that in reality, I was in this cool retro lounge in BGC. These were the songs I grew up to and survived zit attacks with. Today, these are the songs I find comforting—something I could always turn back to, a welcome relief from keeping up with all the new tracks coming out on Spotify every week! Best of all, the crowd was made up of people like me—not a bunch of underage kids spending their parents’ money in bars that should’ve told them to go home and study, kids getting crazy and drunk like it was their first time to taste alcohol ever!!! (OK kids, don’t hate me. I was once like that too.)

In high school, we would go to someone’s house (especially if his parents are not around), buy a couple of beers, nuts and chips and play songs on the stereo until it was dark enough for us to get into trouble with our own parents. Fast forward 13 years, and here I was in a stool near the bar, sipping on A Comrade in Cuba; awaiting eagerly what the DJ had for us next; picking on some mussels for pulutan; and without any curfew worries. It was the same life—just multiplied, beautified by 13 times.

It was love at first sight—this Rocketroom. The food was fantastic—a rarity for bars whose creativity equates to serving onion rings and the like. I loved the Piri Piri Chilean Mussels, a cussworthy dish made of fresh herbed mussels swimming in a white wine and garlic broth. The soup was insanely addictive.

There was also Garlic Bianca Pizza that screams of flavor: roasted and toasted garlic, baby spinach, and Malagos pecorino cheese. The ingredients were fresh and organic, the flavors unapologetic. The Salsa, Guacamole, and Chips was a good choice—a generous platter of tortilla chips, served with delicious salsa and guacamole. This was a delight to munch on while sipping on cocktails.

When it comes to drinks, Rocketroom continues being unabashed. A vodka-based cocktail called A Comrade in Cuba came in a stainless glass, simple yet beautiful. The combination of Stoli, lime juice, ginger ale, and nutmeg somewhat tasted like a mojito, sans the mint. This drink was refreshing and could be easily downed in a matter of seconds.

For something sweet and possibly traitorous, try the Apples in the Penthouse: Washington red apple and cinnamon bark rum, lemon juice, cinnamon syrup, and caramel crisp. If you want something stronger (and cuter), get the Sea Monkey, a concoction of rum, guava daiquiri, sour mix, and bitters.

The next time you find yourself clueless where to go on a Wednesday night, hop into the Rocketroom and surrender to your guilty pleasures. The bar has a great ambience and an awesome menu to match, and as for the music? Just trust me when I say, you—if you were born in the same generation as I was—would abso-fuckin-lutely love it. Baduy naman ng Westlife at ni Cher, you say. Are you out of your mind? Let go of all pretentions and just let loose. And hey, who says you can’t do this on weeknights?

  1. How can I ever resist to jam and jive to the beat of the 90's music? Just by drinking up three bottles of beer, that would be more than enough for me to make the most of my 90's themed party experience . Sure thing, dancing would be one of those😁👏🏻
