The Valentine's Day Survival Guide: Team Eureka Shows You How!

While happy couples are brainstorming fabulous surprises and planning getaways for the fourteenth, some unhappy ones -- myself included -- are dreading The Red Day. Stores adorned with lacy hearts, overpriced flowers, fully-booked restaurants, hellish traffic -- just thinking about these gives me a migraine! What could be a better way to spend the love holiday than spending it alone? Splurge on myself maybe -- do a ton of shopping? Maybe devote my time into an abandoned hobby? Hey, I used to love drawing, maybe spend February 14 sketching portraits? Sounds awesome, right?!

NO.

Not at all!

Last year, I spent Valentine’s with four other guys—dancing for an event in Makati Shangrila. It was a fucking wedding anniversary. While the celebrants and guests cheered about being together for 30 blasted years, I and four other men roved around and asked old ladies if they wanted to do the fucking swing. Don’t get me wrong, I love dancing so much, but not in this context!

Best Valentine's Ever!!! YEAH RIGHT!
I’ve had enough of spending the 14th alone, or with my friends who have partners. I’ve had enough of sitting on a corner, with nothing to fondle but a bottle of beer, while people around me hold each other like they haven’t seen each other in years. (My close friends say it’s my fault—I refuse to get to know people.) I’m sick of it. This time I’m going out!

The heavens must have been listening while I ranted and got all bitter, because while scanning my Facebook newsfeed one day, I stumbled upon a poster for this event called Serendipity. “Let it find you”, the teaser said. What the hell, I’m gonna find it—whatever “it” is—too!

Serendipity is a speed dating event organized by Team Eureka—an events-planning group specializing in events conceptualization, marketing, and publicity, with a desire to turn sparks of ideas into spunky reality by fusing the magic of art and the structure of science. The event will be held at Moonshine Bar, that new bar I discovered in Jupiter Street in Makati on February 13—a day before Valentine’s! That’s a Thursday night, away from evil traffic, yay!

My review of Moonshine Bar: What's New in Makati: Moonshine Bar.

I remember watching the Serendipity movie a few years back, amazed at how the turn of events seemed to conspire to bring two lovers (John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale) together. I don’t believe that what happens in movies happens in real life. However, I do believe that I can make things happen for myself!

Cocktails. Dim lights. Jazz music. Fun and games. A night of good food, good music, and maybe some good company. Finally, an event with a real theme! We all know the normal drill: enter bar, scout prospects, grab some drinks, talk, hook up. Yeah, the usual bar scene. But this onethis one sounds like something just might worth checking out! Looks like a fun night of socializing. I can do that, can’t I?

Why leave it to fate when I can steer myself into the path I want? As Bro. Alvin of The Feast said in one of his talks, “You must align yourself to His plans”. What if He wants me to be happy but I insist on locking myself up inside my room? This stubbornness doesn’t solve The Singleness Problem!

So yes, I’m spending Thursday the Thirteenth in Moonshine Bar for some moonshine mingle! I’ll look my best, talk to everyone, and just be my awesome self!

See you there!

  1. Sounds fun! Literally, the people there will be 'single and ready to mingle.' Will participating cost anything?

  2. Hi Thea! I believe tickets are being sold at P500 for participants and P400 for spectators only. Both are inclusive of food and 2 drinks. You might also want to visit Team Eureka's Facebook page for more info. :)
