Shawarma Lovin' at Mazza

As a lover of spicy food, Mediterranean cuisine has always been one of my favorites. Greasy and bursting with spices and flavors, it’s perfect not just for heavy lunches (I’m a guilty one) but also for drunken nights (guilty again). We used to frequent Uncle Moe’s after several bottles of beer at Citizen Pub and Burger Bar in Ortigas, but the pub has closed down. Does anyone know what happened to Citizen? I awfully miss their Crazy Wasabi Burger!

Definitely, when Mazza Shawarma opened in Woodridge Residences in McKinley, it was greeted with so much enthusiasm both by the corporate and the college crowds in the neighborhood. Serving incredibly cheap but delicious and filling meals, Mazza is the ultimate spot for your Mediterranean fix. A quick look at the small but cozy interior will tell you it’s going to be a simple yet fun dining experience. Several perusals of the menu are required as you would be confused which one to get—you might be tempted to order more than one item, since almost everything is priced below PhP100. Or maybe it’s just me, since I always want to order everything—anywhere, all the time.

No matter what you choose, may it be a kebab meal or some shawarma, you can’t go wrong as long as you accompany your meal with their savory garlic sauce. Kebab choices include beef, chicken, and fish: available with rice or per stick. The same goes for shawarma (beef or chicken), which comes with a side of sliced onions and tomatoes, with rice or in pita bread. They also serve a variety of other Middle Eastern favorites like keema (minced beef), ox brain, pita and assorted dips (hummus, jalapeno hummus, and the must-try garlic-effing-curry dip), and last but not the least, the chicken tandoori—which is deliciously zesty and flavorful and all the good things about living! I have also tried their sizzling pork chops, which is wonderfully spicy in its pairing with their Persian gravy.

So if you’re a glutton on a tight budget but still crave for something truly satisfying, give Mazza a try for a no-fail meal. It’s not the best Mediterranean restaurant around, so don’t expect spectacular food presentation and all that jazz—at Mazza, you get precisely what your money is worth. And believe me, it’s not worth little.
