2013 Philippine National Games

Why joining the Philippine National Games was awesome:

1. There is no registration fee. Joining the Philippine National Games (PNG) is absolutely free! PNG is an annual sports event conducted by Philippine Olympic Committee and Philippine Sports Commission to determine the best athletes per sport. Unlike the rest of the competitions which usually charge PhP2000 (on the average) as registration fee, PNG encourages more athletes to participate by not charging any. In addition, the event is held at different locations every year (in 2012, it was in Dumaguete, this year, in Manila) so dancers get to travel too!

2. It is the most prestigious competition in the country. Technically, POC looks at the results of this competition to see who can be picked as delegates for competitions abroad. The best of the best assemble here, thus creating a fierce, exciting showcase of talents and skills. Being part of the finals is already a sufficient achievement!

3. There are so many amazing competitors. There’s nothing more disappointing that getting all excited over a competition and discovering that less than six couples joined in your event/category—automatically bringing you to the Finals. Somehow, there’s no fulfillment there. It certainly feels better when you defeated 20 other couples or something.

In PNG, both the Novice (2-Dance) and Pre-Amateur (3-Dance) events stared out as Quarter Final rounds (meaning, more than 18 participating couples). It was awesome!

My partner and I placed 8th in Pre-Amateur Latin and 4th in Novice Latin. We could’ve ranked higher in Grade C (I felt it), but I was contented with the results. In addition, I was incredibly happy that my family came to watch again—they are becoming addicted to dancesport like me! After the event, my teammates and I celebrated over dinner and beer, as always, when there is a competition. I hope to join PNG again next year. I’m excited what part of the country it will be held in!
